Physics

Statistically, St Brigid’s College students perform above the National Average each year in Physics.

”I’m delighted I picked Physics as one of my subjects for the Leaving Certificate. It gave me great insights into topics that I’m now currently studying in Engineering in third level and got me lots of points in my exams.” (Past student)

“Physics is the study of how the world works.”
(Missouri University of Science & Technology, 2010).

Physics is the most basic science as it discusses the world as we know it. It is a basis for many other sciences including chemistry, seismology, astronomy and more. Physics brings a broad perspective to any problem. Because a Physics student learns how to consider any problem logically, they are not bound by context. This inventive thinking makes physicists desirable in any field of study or employment.

During the Senior Cycle Physics course, students will get hands on with many topics in the hope of understanding and experimenting with the basics of Physics. These include:

  • Light
  • Sound
  • Heat
  • Waves
  • Mechanics
  • Electricity
  • Nuclear Energy
  • Magnetism
    but to name a few……..

The Aims of the Physics department are:

  • To provide all students with an intellectual and stimulating experience of Physics
  • To foster a deep understanding of core Physical concepts
  • To help and enhance all students to acquire experimental skills transferrable to the exam, and to Third Level
  • To increase students' awareness of the industrial, environmental and social context of Physics

What type of student does Physics suit?

Physics will suit a student who has an especially keen interest in the workings of the world around them.

Physics will suit a student who uses critical thinking and analysis to figure out answers to questions that they have.

Physics will suit a student who has a deep interest in the field of Mathematics and Problem Solving.

By studying Physics, what kind of careers could a student pursue?

Physics is an extremely beneficial subject and in some instances* compulsory subject for students who wish to pursue a career in:

  • Medicine
  • All types of Engineering
  • Biomedical / General Science
  • Computer Science & Information Technology
  • Astronomy
  • Ocean Sciences
  • Airline Pilot
  • Biophysics
    but to name a few……..

*Physics being compulsory for third level courses varies between different third level institutions and universities. Please refer directly to the university website for clarification as to whether or not it is compulsory.
