Welcome to St Brigid's College French Department!
Bienvenue!
The French Department at St Brigid’s College, Loughrea provides a comprehensive French curriculum at both Junior Cycle and Senior Cycle.
The French department has a staff of three teachers who possess many years of expertise and experience. Our teachers have spent a considerable amount of time in French-speaking countries, are members of The French Teacher’s Association of Ireland and have many years’ experience working with The State Examinations Commission. The use and development of innovative ways of teaching and learning the French language is continuously promoted within the department and the school.
Who are the teachers?
Mr. Brian O'Donovan

Junior Cycle:
At St. Brigid’s College, Loughrea the teaching of the Specification for Junior Cycle Modern Foreign Languages is organised around three integrated strands:
1. Communicative competence
2. Language awareness
3. Socio-cultural knowledge and intercultural awareness.
The school actively supports the students’ language learning by developing their Communicative competence, Language awareness and Socio-cultural knowledge and intercultural awareness in an integrated way.
Senior Cycle:
At Senior Cycle level St. Brigid’s College, Loughrea aims to bring students closer to fluency in the French language, as well as developing a good knowledge of literature, culture, geography and national history, in order to provide a context for communication. Senior Cycle French builds on the knowledge acquired at Junior Cycle.
French Facilities
The French Department has a wide range of facilities to enhance the learning environment. Net books are integrated in the teaching and learning process. The resources and equipment of the department facilitate the use of a wide variety of teaching methodologies. The school’s computer department is used as a teaching resource for web-based interactive activities.
Each teacher has their own base classroom to optimize language learning. The French Department classrooms display visual stimulus including posters and maps and provide the students with the opportunity to display their work. European Languages Day, 2017
To celebrate the European Day of Languages on Tuesday 26th September our first year students had a French breakfast morning. The students thoroughly enjoyed their ‘croissant’, ‘pain aux raisins’, ‘chocolat chaud’ et ‘jus d’orange’. They also dressed up in traditional French costumes as can be seen on the pictures. Well done to our students for getting into the spirit of the day! Magnifique!

Twinning with Collège Antoine De Saint-Exupéry
French exchange students from Collège Antoine De Saint-Exupéry, Lesneven, Brittany arriving at St Brigids College for a day of cultural and linguistic exchange between both schools.
Activities included a 'Petit Déjeuner irlandais', volleyball matches and a concert with performances from both schools. It was a wonderfully successful day for our school and the French students reported it to be the highlight of their visit to Ireland.
We look forward to many more exchanges with our twin school in Brittany including Skyping between classrooms and school visits to each others schools!!!
