Assessment for the new Junior Cycle Business Course
2nd Year - Classroom based assessment 1
This must be a group activity and is graded internally according to specific “features of quality” (see NCCA overview above). The grade received is recorded on the schools Junior Cycle report and does not form part of the end of cycle certification from the SEC. Students complete research and reflection sheets which are the basis of assessing the individual students work by reference to the actual project. The emphasis is on research and accurate presentation of the material given.
3rd Year - Classroom based assessment 2
This is an individual presentation which is again graded internally according to “features of quality” (see NCCA booklet attached). Students are then requested to complete an assessment of their own learning both in terms of knowledge gained and their experience of communicating. This is completed in two 40 minute periods. The students’ assessment of their learning is then sent to the State Examinations Commission for grading and makes up 10% their overall grade in June.
Written Exam
A standard written exam covering all 37 learning outcomes on the Business Studies syllabus (set out at beginning of text book) makes up the remaining 90% of the result in June. There is no longer a higher or ordinary level in Business Studies.
